METHODIST DAILY REFLECTION FOR 26TH SEPTEMBER, 2026 - WATER FROM THE ROCK

DATE
: SATURDAY, 26TH SEPTEMBER 2026

THEME: WATER FROM THE ROCK

PASSAGE: EXODUS 17:1-7

1 And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, after their journeys, according to the commandment of the Lord, and pitched in Rephidim: and there was no water for the people to drink.
2 Wherefore the people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt the Lord?
3 And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore is this that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?
4 And Moses cried unto the Lord, saying, What shall I do unto this people? they be almost ready to stone me.
5 And the Lord said unto Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go.
6 Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.
7 And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the Lord, saying, Is the Lord among us, or not?

MESSAGE:

Water is very essential for human existence. Without water, catastrophe is inevitable. Research has it that without water survival is crucial for only seven days but without food survival can be for two months and above. The Israelites in their wilderness journey needed water when they became thirsty. Their complaint made Moses to rebuke them, reminding them of God's faithfulness but they persisted.

Therefore, Moses turned to the Lord for help, and the Lord said to him in verse 6, "Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink. "And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel."

Today's life experiences can be compared to the Israelites' wilderness experience. The society, particularly in Nigeria, is thirsty for drinkable water in the midst of abundant waters. This is as a result of failure in governance. Beyond thirst for water, there is dire thirst for peace, relationship, economic viability, etc.

God providing water for the thirsty Israelites in wilderness is evident of His power to provide for you today. But in asking, do not act wild like the Israelites. Rather, in submissiveness to His supreme power over His creation, ask and patiently wait. Matthew 7:7 says, 7. "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you."

Dear reader, the Lord is not deaf, and not far from your reach that you cannot approach Him. He is very much present to hear and answer you. Humbly and persistently call Him.

MEMORY VERSE:

"Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you." Matthew 7:7
