METHODIST DAILY REFLECTION FOR 25TH SEPTEMBER 2026 - DANGERS OF CARNALITY

DATE
: FRIDAY, 25TH SEPTEMBER 2026

THEME: DANGERS OF CARNALITY

PASSAGE: MARK 9:38-42

38 And John answered him, saying, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and he followeth not us: and we forbad him, because he followeth not us.
39 But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me.
40 For he that is not against us is on our part.
41 For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.
42 And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea.

MESSAGE:

Carnality, as used here, is having a physical judgment of that which has spiritual connotation. John, a disciple of Jesus, said to him, "Teacher, we saw someone who is not one of us casting out the evil spirit in Your "Name." Jesus' reply was to his amazement, that they should not forbid such person because no one who does miracle in His name will turn round to be against Him.

John could not understand that there are innumerable numbers of Jesus followers outside the twelve than the handful number known to them. The word of God in John 1:12, says, that as many as believe in Him He gave power to become the sons of God. It then means that those He gave power also have the right to, in His Name, cast out devils. Hence, Jesus said if you believe, greater work than He did shall such a believer do.

Know that everyone has a mission to carry out. But, as a believer, you have a defined and divine mission to carry out for God. The One who formed you in His image and calls you into being.

On this account, never close door to other believers in the service of God. Rather, identify those of the house of faith whether on denominational or universal level, to encourage one another to accomplish this divine mandate. Remember the scripture that says, by their fruit we shall know them" (Matt 7:16).

Note that the dangers of severing the called of God and doubting true servants of God may slow down the Kingdom business. So always seek and trust God's judgment over His elects and not your own judgment.

MEMORY VERSE:

"But Jesus said, Do not forbid him, for no one who works a miracle in My name can soon afterward speak evil of Me." Mark 9:39

HYMN: MHB 249(6.5.6.5.D) IN the name of Jesus

1. IN the Name of Jesus
Every knee shall bow,
Every tongue confess Him
King of Glory now.
Tis the Father's pleasure
We should call Him Lord,
Who from the beginning
Was the mighty Word.

2. Humbled for a season,
To receive a name
From the lips of sinners
Unto whom He came,
Faithfully He bore it
Spotless to the last,
Brought it back victorious
When from death He passed.

3. Name Him, brothers, name Him,
With love strong as death,
But with awe and wonder,
And with bated breath
He is God the Saviour,
He is Christ the Lord,
Ever to be worshipped,
Trusted, and adored.

4. In your hearts enthrone Him;
There let Him subdue
All that is not holy,
All that is not true;
Crown Him as your Captain
In temptation's hour;
Let His will enfold you
In its light and power.

5. Brothers, this Lord Jesus
Shall return again
With His Father's glory,
With His angel train;
For all wreaths of empire
Meet upon His brow,
And our hearts confess Him
King of Glory now.

PRAYER

Eternal Father, grant us the wisdom to know and serve You better, In Jesus' Name. Amen.
