METHODIST DAILY REFLECTION FOR 24TH SEPTEMBER, 2026 - THE GOSPEL OF GREATNESS OF HUMILITY

DATE:
THURSDAY, 24TH SEPTEMBER 2026

THEME: THE GOSPEL OF GREATNESS OF HUMILITY

PASSAGE: MARK 9:30-37

30 And they departed thence, and passed through Galilee; and he would not that any man should know it.
31 For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day.
32 But they understood not that saying, and were afraid to ask him.
33 And he came to Capernaum: and being in the house he asked them, What was it that ye disputed among yourselves by the way?
34 But they held their peace: for by the way they had disputed among themselves, who should be the greatest.
35 And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.
36 And he took a child, and set him in the midst of them: and when he had taken him in his arms, he said unto them,
37 Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name, receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me, receiveth not me, but him that sent me.

MESSAGE:

The humility of Christ, as displayed in the gospel of St. Mark 9, is such that no one else can be compared to. In fact, Jesus used three strong figurative expressions that of laying down his life, his servant-nature and that of a little child, to explain the kind of humility he desired that His followers should possess.

Jesus spoke of His willingness to die in verse 31, saying, "The Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of men, and they will kill Him. And after He is killed, He will rise the third day." His acceptance to die does not imply cowardice on His part but strength in humility. Though He had power to evade the coming death He, in humility, submitted to the will of His Father to die for the world.

Though a King, Jesus took upon Himself the form of a servant, and He took a little child in His arm, telling the disciples that they must humble themselves like the little child. "Little" here is expressing a deeper metaphor of how great their humility should be if they must be great or to be reckoned with in heaven.

The teaching signifies that true humility brings greatness. Christ's humility onto death raised Him above other personalities, principalities and powers, and gave Him victory over death, so that as many as believe in Him will not experience the second death in hellfire. In the same vein, as many as humble themselves, the scripture says, God will exalt them.

Dearly beloved, pride kills. Do you want to achieve greatness? Humility and service offer the surest way to it. As you humbly do God's will, you will share in the promise of His greatness in heaven in Jesus' Name.
