METHODIST DAILY REFLECTION FOR TODAY SATURDAY, 19TH SEPTEMBER 2026 - INTERCEDE FOR OTHERS
DATE: SATURDAY, 19TH SEPTEMBER 2026
THEME:INTERCEDE FOR OTHERS
PASSAGE: PHILIPPIANS 1:3-19
MESSAGE:
Apostle Paul here writes a heartfelt letter to the Christian community in Philippi. In the passage we read today, Paul speaks of his deep conviction and commitment to Christ, even in the face of adversity. He encourages the believers in Philippi to stand firm in their faith, live lives worthy of the gospel, and rejoice in their suffering for the sake of Christ. Let us, too, turn our hearts and minds to this inspiring message from a man incarcerated in prison yard.
According to Philippians 1:3-5, Paul was praying for the believers (the saints) in Plilippi, a church he founded there during his 2nd Missionary Journey. He says "I thank my God upon every remembrance of you...from the first day till now."
Under normal circumstances, the saints should pray for Paul to obtain freedom but it is Paul praying for the saints! That shows the type of person Paul was. How many of us can be in jail and pray for those who are living freely outside the prison environment? We should even pray for our enemies and those who hate us and those who despitefully use us (Matt. 5:44)
Paul states, "For to me, to live is Christ" (Philippians 1:21). This signifies that his entire purpose and meaning in life are centered around Christ. He sees living for Christ as the ultimate goal and purpose. Paul encourages the Philippians to "conduct themselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ" (Philippians 1:27). This means living in a way that reflects the teachings and values of Christ, demonstrating a strong and unified faith, and striving together for the gospel.
He emphasizes the importance of being united with one spirit and one mind while striving for the faith of the gospel (Philippians 1:27). This highlights the need for believers to support each other and work together in their faith. He urges the Philipplans and all Christians to be "In nothing terrified by their adversaries" (Philipplans 1:28). This their beliefs.
MEMORY VERSE:
"For God is my record how greatly I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ". Philippians 1:8
HYMN: MHB 533 (CM) Prayer is the soul's sincere desire
1. Prayer is the soul's sincere desire,
Unuttered or exprest,
The motion of a hidden fire
That trembles in the breast.
2. Prayer is the burden of a sigh,
The falling of a tear,
The upward glancing of an eye,
When none but God is near.
3. Prayer is the simplest form of speech
That infant lips can try;
Prayer the sublimest strains that reach
The Majesty on high.
4. Prayer is the contrite sinner's voice
Returning from his ways,
While angels in their songs rejoice
And cry, "Behold, he prays!"
5. Prayer is the Christian's vital breath,
The Christian's native air,
His watchword at the gates of death--
He enters heaven with prayer.
6. O Thou by whom we come to God,
The Life, the Truth, the Way,
The path of prayer Thyself hast trod--
Lord, teach us how to pray.
PRAYER
Help us, O God, to pray and Intercede for one another, in Jesus' Name. Amen.
