METHODIST DAILY REFLECTION FOR TODAY 28TH AUGUST, 2026 - SAY WHAT YOU MEAN.
DATE: FRIDAY, 28TH AUGUST 2026
THEME: SAY WHAT YOU MEAN
PASSAGE: GENESIS 29:15-20
15 And Laban said unto Jacob, Because thou art my brother, shouldest thou therefore serve me for nought? tell me, what shall thy wages be?
16 And Laban had two daughters: the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel.
17 Leah was tender eyed; but Rachel was beautiful and well favoured.
18 And Jacob loved Rachel; and said, I will serve thee seven years for Rachel thy younger daughter.
19 And Laban said, It is better that I give her to thee, than that I should give her to another man: abide with me.
20 And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to her.
MESSAGE:
T he statement, "Say what you mean" challenges us to communicate clearly and authentically, both in our relationships and in our spiritual lives. In our passage, Jacob's devotion and the bond of family, offers him a fair opportunity to express his we witness a vivid interaction between Jacob and Laban. Laban, recognizing desires by asking, "Tell me what your wages should be." Laban's inquiry opens the door for Jacob to articulate what he truly wants: Rachel, the woman he loves.
Jacob's immediate response reveals his heart. He doesn't hesitate; he confidently declares "I will work for you seven years in return for your daughter Rachel." In expressing his intentions so transparently, Jacob shows us the importance of being upfront about our desires; a lesson both timeless and timely.
We see Jacob's willingness to communicate his intentions clearly; a reflection of his sincere feelings towards Rachel. In our lives, being open about our feelings and intentions fosters healthier relationships, whether in romance, friendship, or even professional settings.
When we express our thoughts and desires clearly, we set healthy expectations. Jacob knew what he wanted, and by articulating that to Laban, he helped to eliminate misunderstandings that could arise later. Consider journaling about what you desire in your relationships and share those thoughts with others. This can prevent confusion and build a stronger foundation for understanding.
As you seek to "say what you mean" in your conversations, take time to pray for guidance, Seek God to help articulate your thoughts thoughtfully and clearly. Let your words reflect your true intentions, allowing for authenticity and growth within your connections.
MEMORY VERSE:
"But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath. But let your "Yes" be "Yes," and your "No," "No," lest you fall into judgment".(James 5:12)
HYMN: MHB 371(8.8.8.8.8.8) AND can it be that I should gain
1. AND can it be that I should gain
An interest in the Saviour's blood?
Died He for me, who caused His pain?
For me, who Him to death pursued?
Amazing love! how can it be.
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me.
2. 'TIs mystery all! The Immortal dies :
Who can explore His strange design?
In vain the first-born seraph tries
To sound the depths of love divine.
'TIs mercy all! let earth adore,
Let angel minds inquire no more.
3. He left His Father's throne above So free,
so infinite His grace Emptied
Himself of all but love,
And bled for Adam's helpless race.
'Tis mercy all, immense and free;
For, O my God, it found out me !
4. Long my imprisoned spirit lay
Fast bound in sin and nature's night;
Thine eye diffused a quickening
ray— I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
My chains fell off, my heart was
free, I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.
5. No condemnation now I dread;
Jesus, and all in Him, is mine!
Alive in Him, my living Head,
And clothed in righteousness divine,
Bold I approach the eternal throne,
And claim the crown, through Christ, my own.
PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the example set before us in Your Word. Help us to be clear and intentional with our words just as Jacob was. May we strive to communicate authentically in every aspect of our lives.
