METHODIST DAILY REFLECTION FOR TODAY 27TH AUGUST, 2026 - THE IMPORTANCE OF CONFESSING JESUS CHRIST
DATE: THURSDAY, 27TH AUGUST 2026
THEME: THE IMPORTANCE OF CONFESSING JESUS CHRIST
PASSAGE: MATTHEW 16:13-20
13 When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?
14 And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.
15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?
16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
20 Then charged he his disciples that they should tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ.
MESSAGE
In this interactive exchange between Jesus and His disciples, we witness a revealed truth: the importance of confessing who Jesus truly is. When Jesus asks His disciples, "But who do you say that I Am?" He is not only testing their understanding but also inviting them to take a stand in their faith. Simon Peter's declaration, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God," signifies a deep revelation that has eternal implications.
Jesus' inquiry is pointed and personal. He wants to know what the disciples believe about Him. This is a question that transcends time and applies to us as well. In our daily lives, we are sometimes confronted with the opinions of others: what does the world say about Jesus? Is He a good teacher, just a prophet, or perhaps a historical figure? But more importantly, He challenges us with the question, "Who do you say that I Am?"
Our response is essential. When we confess Jesus as the Christ the Anointed One, the promised Messiah, it shapes our identity, our purpose, and our worldview. This is not merely an academic acknowledgment; it is a vital expression of our faith that influences how we live and act each day.
Jesus' declaration about building His church on this rock -is monumental. Our collective confession of Christ fosters community. When we boldly share our faith with others, we participate in the growth of the Church, the Body of Christ. Confessing Jesus is not just about our individual salvation; it impacts others around us. Consider your daily interactions. How can you create opportunities to express your faith? Whether through casual conversations, acts of kindness or spending time in fellowship, your acknowledgment of Christ can encourage and uplift those who may not yet know Him.
Finally, Jesus gives Peter (and by extension, the Church) the keys of heaven, providing them authority to act in His name. This is a powerful reminder that the kingdom of our confession carries weight. It equips us for service and empowers us to live out the gospel binding and losing in the realms of our influence.
MEMORY VERSE:
"That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." (Romans 10:9)
HYMN: MHB 522 (7.6.7.6.D.) I COULD not do without Thee
1. I COULD not do without Thee,
O Saviour of the lost,
Whose precious blood redeemed me
At such tremendous cost;
Thy righteousness. Thy pardon.
Thy precious blood must be
My only hope and comfort,
My glory and my plea.
2. 1 could not do without Thee,
I cannot stand alone,
I have no strength or goodness,
No wisdom of my own;
But Thou, beloved Saviour,
Art all in all to me,
And weakness will be power
If leaning hard on Thee.
3. 1 could not do without Thee;
No other friend can read
The spirit's strange deep longings,
interpreting Its need;
No human heart could enter
Each dim recess of mine,
And soothe, and hush, and calm it,
O blessed Lord, but Thine.
4. 1 could not do without Thee;
For years are fleeting fast,
And soon in solemn loneness
The river must be passed :
But Thou wilt never leave me;
And though the waves roll high,
I know Thou wilt be near me
And whisper: It is I.
PRAYER
the living God. Help us to have the courage to confess You before others Dear Lord, thank You for revealing Yourself to us as the Christ, the Son of and to live in a way that honours Your name. Amen.
