METHODIST DAILY REFLECTION FOR TODAY WEDNESDAY, 26TH AUGUST 2026 - A NEW WAY OF LIVING
DATE: WEDNESDAY, 26TH AUGUST 2026
THEME: A NEW WAY OF LIVING
PASSAGE:
ROMANS 12:1-8
1 I appeal to you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. 3 For by the grace given to me I bid every one among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith which God has assigned him. 4 For as in one body we have many members, and all the members do not have the same function, 5 so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. 6 Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; 7 if service, in our serving; he who teaches, in his teaching; 8 he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who contributes, in liberality; he who gives aid, with zeal; he who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.MASSAGE:
Romans 12:1-8, often called the "living-sacrifice" passage, encourages Christians to offer their lives as a holy and acceptable sacrifice to God, a more profound worship than mere rituals. This involves actively transforming their minds to discern and align their lives with God's acceptable and perfect will. It also emphasizes the diverse gifts and roles within the church, where each member, according to the grace given to him/her, contributes to the body of Christ.
But Paul asks us to consider a different meaning for the word "sacrifice." He calls us to remember that the root of this word is the same as the word "sacred." Instead of thinking of a sacrifice as something we have to give up, or give away, or kill, Paul invites us to recognize that true sacrifice means setting apart something as sacred or holy. The thing we are to make holy is our whole selves.
Our transformation begins the moment we accept Jesus as Lord, and continue to do so throughout our lives. We aren't talking about death here, but full and abundant life, dedicating to God our entire will and being. But, in order to be transformed into Christ-like people, we must also fight against the urge to conform to the world around us. We have to stop crawling down off the altar.
Paul writes; "Don't think of yourselves more highly than you ought to think." In other words, beware of pride. It is an easy trap to fall into. After all, if Christ has set us apart as a chosen people, doesn't that make us better than everyone else? Well, no. It doesn't. Being part of the Body of Christ is less about privilege and more about responsibility.
Note what Paul says here in verse one: "present your body as a living sacrifice." This kind of set-apart and holy living needs to be manifested anywhere we are in the church, the community and nation at large.
Our part in the body connects us to all the other parts of Christ's body, the church. We depend on one another to make the Body of Christ function properly as it should, It takes all of us to be the Body of Christ, and each of us has a distinct role to play within that body, based on the gifts we have been given.
MEMORY VERSE:
"And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is good and acceptable and perfect will of God" Romans 12:2
HYMN: MHB 516 (66.9.D and refrain) WHEN we walk with the Lord
1. WHEN we walk with the Lord
In the light of His Word
What a glory He sheds on our way
While we do His good will,
He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.
REF: Trust and obey,
for there's no other way
To be happy in Jesus,
But to trust and obey.
2. Not a shadow can rise,
Not a cloud in the skies,
But His smile quickly drives It away;
Not a doubt nor a fear,
Not a sigh nor a tear,
Can abide while we trust and obey.
3. Not a burden we bear,
Not a sorrow we share,
But our toil He doth richly repay;
Not a grief nor a loss,
Not a frown nor a cross,
But la blest If we trust and obey.
4. But we never can prove
The delights of His love
Until all on the altar we lay;
For the favour He shows,
And the Joy He bestows,
Are for them who will trust and obey.
5. Then in fellowship sweet
We will Sit at His feet,
Or we'll walk by His side In the way;
What He says we will do,
Where He sends we will go
Never fear, only trust and obey.
PRAYER:
Make our lives a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable unto You, Lord in Jesus Christ's Name. Amen.
